Находясь в Крыму на отдыхе, Николай II и императрица Александра Федоровна неожиданно для себя столкнулись с множеством проблем: болезнь царя и борьба за его жизнь, проявление власти и стойкости со стороны императрицы, решение вопроса о престолонаследии, преданность и предательство министров. В совершенно другом ракурсе ялтинский инцидент рассматривался С. Ю. Витте: под смертельной болезнью царя подразумевался обычный дифтерит, а не брюшной тиф, в вопросе о престолонаследии отстаивал кандидатуру по мужской линии - вел. кн. Михаила Александровича. Витте предложил на совещании министров решать эту проблему на основе законодательства, а не по желанию императрицы. С этого момента положение самого успешного министра в правительстве Николая II пошатнулось. Вследствие болезни императора привычная амплитуда отношений начала колебаться - от разочарования к недоверию и тайному желанию отправить Витте в отставку.
